Vernon Hins

February 22, 1923 — September 15, 2015

Vernon Hins, 92, Jamestown, ND died peacefully in his sleep on September 15, 2015. Vernon Frederick Hins was born February 22, 1923 to Gustave and Martha (Bitz) Hins in Medina, ND. He grew up in Medina and received his education in a one room country school. He greatly valued education but life's circumstances prevented him from continuing on his own. During World War II Vernon served in the Philippines, and upon his return was united in marriage to Leah C. Hofmann on February 29, 1948. From this union five children were born, Betty, Janice, Anthony, Jeffrey and Barbara.
Throughout Vernon's lifetime, he had several jobs, including farming, construction, driving truck, custodial, and grounds maintenance. Vernon had many interests and was knowledgeable about a wide range of topics. He loved fishing, reading western novels, baseball, playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved any and all company. He was noted for his ability to fool people with his "eye" and literally slept with one eye open. Following the death of his wife, Leah, Vernon moved to Kinder-Care, Inc. an assisted living facility in West Fargo, ND. He greatly enjoyed his "new home" where he was surrounded by the kind and loving attention of its caring personnel.
Vernon is survived by his five children, Betty (Dale) Werner, West Fargo, ND, Janice (Bill) Mimnaugh, Breckenridge, MN, Anthony Hins, Kindred, ND, Jeffrey (Jean) Hins, Beulah, ND, and Barbara (Greg) Davis, Edina, MN; 14 grandchildren, 9 step-grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Opp and Margaret Lewis; one brother, Rueben Hins. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends, especially his dear friends Don and Sally Schmid. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leah Hins, his parents, Martha and Gustave Hins, his brothers, Valentine, Edalor, Curtis and one great-grandchild, Jacob Bakken.
