Viola "Sis" Toay, 96, Edgeley, ND, died Monday, June 15, 2009 at Hi-Acre Manor, Jamestown, ND.
Viola LaVerna Nicolai was born December 10, 1912 on the family farm in Bluebird Township, LaMoure County, ND, the daughter of Edward and Ida (Wilson) Nicolai. She attended a one room school in Bluebird Township until eighth grade and then helped on the family farm. She married Donald Toay on April 22, 1929 and they farmed with her parents until 1935 when they bought a farm in Glenmore Township. She continued to live on the same farm until March 24, 2009 when she became resident of Hi-Acres Manor in Jamestown, ND.
Viola was a true farm girl/wife. She milked many cows, fed numerous calves throughout her years of life and was an avid gardener. Many people remember her for the wonderful strawberry jam she made and either sold or gave away.
Survivors include 3 children: Donna Mae Carlson, Edgeley, ND; Darlene Dawson, Bozeman, MT; Donald (Betty) Toay Jr., Edgeley, ND; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 siblings and 1 great-grandchild.
Funeral - 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 19, 2009 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Edgeley, ND.
Visitation - 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Lisko Funeral Chapel, Edgeley, ND.
Interment - Mount Hope Cemetery, Edgeley, ND
