Walter Kirchofner, 85, Jamestown, ND, died Thursday, July 24, 2008 at Hi-Acres Manor, Jamestown, ND.
Walter Kirchofner was born December 25, 1922 in Devils Lake, ND, the son of John Sr. and Annie (Miller) Kirchofner. He attended school at Rugby, ND. Following his schooling, he enlisted in the United States Navy in November of 1942. He served in the South Asiatic Pacific and the North Atlantic Theater during World War II on the battleship U.S.S. South Dakota as a gunner's mate. In January of 1946, he was discharged at Fort Snelling, MN. He returned to Rugby, ND where he was employed at Gronvold Motors and later at Selland Motors. Walt married Alma Heilman on April 26, 1949. In April of 1956, he moved with his family to Jamestown, ND where he worked as a car salesman at Midwest Motors. In 1977, he went to work for Paul Liechty Car Sales where he worked as a salesman until retiring on February 15, 1985.
Walt was a member of St. James Basilica and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the American Legion, VFW, Elks, DAV, Eagles and the Drum and Bugle Corp.
Survivors include his wife, Alma; son, Wayne (Sumalee) Kirchofner, Minot, ND; 2 grandchildren, Annie and Mary Kirchofner, Minot, ND; 3 brothers: John, Edward and Roy Kirchofner all of Minot, ND and a sister, Betty (Arnold) Kraft, Karlsruhe, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers: Sebastian and Jacob; 4 sisters: Josephine, Magdalena, Frances and Cecelia; nieces and nephews.
Funeral - 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 28, 2008 at St. James Basilica, Jamestown, ND
Prayer Service - Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:45 p.m., prayer service at 8:00 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2008 at St. James Basilica, Jamestown, ND
Visitation - noon to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2008 at Lisko Funeral Chapel; 1 hour prior to the prayer service at the church on Sunday and 1 hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Monday
Interment - 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at the North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, Mandan, ND
Visitation - noon to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2008 at Lisko Funeral Chapel; 1 hour prior to the prayer service at the church on Sunday and 1 hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Monday
Interment - 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at the North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, Mandan, ND
