Walter Miller, 68, Jamestown, ND passed away Sunday, November 26, 2017 at his home in Jamestown under hospice care after courageously fighting a health condition.
Walter was born September 23, 1949 in Oakes, ND, the son of John and Delores (Mikkelson) Miller. He lived on a farm in the Oakes area with his family and attended school in LaMoure, ND where he graduated in 1968. Walt worked for a road construction company and then became a plumber working for Arneson’s and then Bob’s Plumbing and Heating until his retirement.
Walt came from a simple cloth, proud and strong. He never asked for much but your respect and to do your best. He worked hard for what he had with pride and tried to instill that in his children. Honesty was also important to him and to break that you didn’t sit well with him. He always placed his children’s needs above his own and was there for support.
Walt had a very contagious laugh and would have you rolling in laughter with him and through his years we got to see it a lot. He married Julie VanDam on September 25th, 1981 in Jamestown, where they began their journey together with their beautiful blended family. After 10 years went by, they purchased an old home where he worked with hard determination and pride to make it beautiful with many memories. Christmas was his favorite holiday. He would be out doing the Griswold’s with lights all over the outside of the home, thus blowing the breaker. He would always have the largest Christmas trees Jamestown had, which yes, went into the ceiling quite often. There would be presents galore under the tree with the anxiousness of his family to help celebrate the holiday.
Walter was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also enjoyed going to auction sales with his brother-in-law, camping and entertaining others. Many years he hosted steak fry’s at his home and because of so many attending, he began having them at Pipestem, putting on quite the feed for all. When his health started to decline, unfortunately, all these joys stopped. He then enjoyed being at his home and out on his deck.
Walter is survived by his wife; Julie, of Jamestown, two daughters; Wendy (Chris) Schmid, of Carrington, Michelle (Daron) Lund, of Jamestown, three sons; Eric VanDam, Daniel Waltz, and Jon (Kessa) Miller, all of Jamestown, and nine grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; John and Delores Miller, two brothers; Paul and Lewis Miller, one sister; Ruth, and three infant grandchildren.
Memorial Service: 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 2, 2017 at First United Methodist Church, Jamestown, ND with Pastor Michelle Brennan, officiating.
No burial will be scheduled at this time.
