William R. Holmes, 90, Woodworth, North Dakota, passed away at Golden Acres Manor in Carrington, ND on Tuesday, November 4, 2008.
William ""Billy"" was born January 11, 1918 to William and Ena (Wilkinson) Holmes on the family farm. He farmed with his parents until his marriage to Marian Carter on June 26, 1940. They farmed for many years, followed by one year in Seattle, where Billy worked at Boeing, and Marian attended beauty school. They returned to North Dakota and continued to farm and established a beauty and ceramic shop on the farm and in Jamestown. Billy also drove school bus for the Woodworth School District for many years. After retirement, they spent a number of years traveling to Florida and Arizona during the winter months.
Billy enjoyed playing all musical instruments, rock polishing, and was a great motorcyle enthusiast. The last few years he formed a special attachment to his cats, Smokey and Heeshee.
Billy is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marian, Woodworth; sisters-in-law, Shirley Zimmerman, Cleveland, OH, Ferne Chapman, Tacoma, WA, Gladyce Erling, Sequim, WA, and Yvonne LaPorte, Green Bay, WI; brother-in-law, Winfred Carter, Seattle, WA; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Lois O'Neill; and nephews, William Gannon and Robert O'Neill.
Funeral Service: 10:30 AM, Saturday, November 8, 2008 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Woodworth, ND with Pastors Howard Lyons and Bryce Tahran officiating.
Visitation: 1:00 to 7:00 PM, Friday, November 7, 2008 at the Eddy Funeral Home in Jamestown.
Prayer Service: 7:00 PM, Friday, November 7, 2008 at the Eddy Funeral Chapel.
Burial: Gem Cemetery, Woodworth, North Dakota
