Helen (Johnson) Hample

Helen Hample, 104, Jamestown, ND passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at Edgewood Senior Living, Jamestown, ND.

Helen, the daughter of the Reverend C.A.L. and Tora Johnson was born October 18, 1914 at Wildrose, North Dakota. She attended grade schools in Galesburg and Mapleton and graduated from Lincoln High School in Casselton, ND in 1931. Following graduation in 1935 from Jamestown College, she was teacher and principal at Edgeley High School for five years. She then taught at Wahpeton High School and Montevideo High School in Minnesota before entering government services during WWII as an aircraft communicator for the Civil Aeronautics Administration in Huntington, West Virginia. Helen transferred to the Jamestown Airport office in 1945 and resigned in 1947. Helen and Ross M. Hample of Edgeley were married by her father on November 22, 1946 in the New Kirk of the Heather in Glendale, California.

In 1947 she began working for Jamestown College as Alumni File Organizer, later teaching part-time and in 1953 she was hired as Dean of Women and later as Dean of Students. She was a member of the English Department from 1959 until her retirement in 1980 when she was awarded the status of Professor Emeritus and in 1987 received the Honorary Degree Doctor of Humane Letters. As an alum she served as Alumni Association President and was inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame.

As a confirmed member of the Presbyterian Church she served as an elder, Sunday school teacher, circle and women’s association president. Served as a charter member on the Jamestown Civic Center Board of Directors for 15 years.

Her active membership and leadership in the American Association of University Women (AAUW), Chapter K PEO, Portfolio, Jamestown Fine Arts Association, Jamestown Hospital Auxiliary were important to her. She enjoyed teaching, extensive traveling, reading, playing bridge and working crossword puzzles.

Helen is survived by her son Stephen Ross, Bozeman, MT; daughter Carol (Mike) Switzer, Jamestown, ND; granddaughters Amanda (Rick) Koller, Seattle, WA, and Susie, Helena, MT and great-grandson Parker Alan Koller.

In lieu of flowers memorial preferred to Jamestown College, Helen Hample Scholarship or United Presbyterian Church, Jamestown.

Celebration of Life: 1:30 PM, Monday, February 4, 2019 at the United Presbyterian Church in Jamestown with Pastor Bob Boyar officiating and at Helen’s request, you are encouraged to wear bright colors.

Inurnment: In the spring.
